Pronounced “Cull Eela” whish is the Gaelic name for the Sound of Islay. For some, the distillery’s pronunciation is as remote as its location, sitting as it does on the rugged eastern coast of Islay, where it has remained hidden from view since 1846. However you say it, the fine, smoky whisky produced by generations of islanders is worth exploring.
Nose: Subdued, citric fruitiness; hints of autumn rise out of the glass with apples and pears. A little water raises almond oil, fresh fruitiness and a trace of olive oil.
Palate: Drinks well at natural strength: flavours of spicy sweets and Applewood smoked ham. Smooth, pleasant mouth-feel; with water light acidity. A complex balance of primary tastes.
Finish: Sweet smokiness in the lingering with hints of tart green apple, spicy white pepper and big salty sea notes that linger with memories of bonfires on the beach that burn long into the night.
